Last updated for the NMMS 2026 cycle. This guide is for Std 8 students from government, government-aided, or local body schools whose family income is within the eligibility threshold.
What is NMMS?
The National Means cum Merit Scholarship (NMMS) is a Government of India scheme launched in 2008 by the Ministry of Education (formerly MHRD) to provide financial assistance to bright students from economically weaker sections, encouraging them to continue their education through Std 9, 10, 11, and 12.
The exam is conducted at the state level by respective State Examination Boards. In Maharashtra, it is administered by the Maharashtra State Council of Examinations (MSCE), Pune. It is one of the most rewarding scholarship exams for school students in India — qualifying students receive ₹1,000/month for 48 months (Std 9 through Std 12), totaling ₹48,000 over 4 years.
NMMS — Exam Pattern
The exam consists of two papers, both held on the same day (usually a Sunday in December):
| Paper | Subject | Questions | Marks | Duration |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Paper 1 | Mental Ability Test (MAT — बौद्धिक क्षमता चाचणी) | 90 | 90 | 90 min |
| Paper 2 | Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT — शालेय क्षमता चाचणी) | 90 | 90 | 90 min |
| Total | — | 180 | 180 | 3 hours |
Paper 1: Mental Ability Test (MAT)

- Mathematical operations and missing numbers
- Mirror images and water reflections
- Embedded figures and spatial reasoning
- Logical reasoning and statement-conclusion
- Calendar and clock problems
- Venn diagrams
Paper 2: Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT)
Tests subject knowledge based on Std 7 and Std 8 syllabus of the State Board (in Maharashtra: Maharashtra State Board curriculum). 90 questions across three subjects:
| Subject | Marks | Topics |
|---|---|---|
| General Science | 35 | Physics 11 + Chemistry 11 + Biology 13 |
| Social Studies | 35 | History 15 + Civics 5 + Geography 15 |
| Mathematics | 20 | Std 7 + Std 8 mathematical concepts |

Important Dates (Approximate, for Maharashtra)
- Notification & online application: September
- Application deadline: October–November
- Admit card download: ~10 days before exam
- Exam date: Third Sunday of December
- Answer key release: ~1 week after exam
- Result: February–March of following year
- Scholarship disbursement: Begins from Std 9 (next academic year)
Qualifying Marks & Selection Criteria
- General category: 40% combined in MAT + SAT (i.e., minimum 72 marks out of 180)
- SC/ST/Divyang category: 32% combined (minimum 58 marks)
- Selection method: Final selection is based on total marks (MAT + SAT combined) and is district-wise + category-wise quota distribution. Just qualifying isn't enough — you must rank within your district's quota for selection.
- Tie-breaking: If two students have equal total marks, the one with higher SAT marks is preferred. If still tied, older student gets the seat.
Preparation Strategy
Phase 1: Foundation (Months 1–2)
Brush up on all your Std 7 and current Std 8 textbooks (especially Science, Mathematics, Social Studies). Pay attention to chapters in the syllabus — NMMS questions are often direct lifts from the textbook concepts. For MAT, start solving basic reasoning books to build comfort with patterns.
Phase 2: Focused Practice (Months 3–4)
For MAT: solve 25–30 reasoning questions daily. Focus on classification, series, coding-decoding, and direction sense — these together account for ~50% of MAT.
For SAT: revise Class 7 textbooks alongside Class 8. Many science questions test Class 7 concepts (e.g., reflection, photosynthesis, components of food, environment). Make compact notes per chapter.
Phase 3: Mock Tests (Final Month)
Switch to full-length mock tests under timed conditions. Aim for 4–6 mocks. Practice managing 90 questions in 90 minutes (1 minute per question) — time pressure simulation matters at this age.
Suggested Books & Resources
- NCERT / Maharashtra State Board textbooks (Class 7 + 8): Highest priority. ~80% of SAT questions are concept-based on these.
- MAT Reasoning: R.S. Aggarwal 'A Modern Approach to Verbal & Non-Verbal Reasoning' (junior level chapters) → MTG NMMS Reasoning book.
- NMMS-specific guides: MTG 'NMMS Examination Class 8' or Disha 'NMMS Guide'. These have past year papers and topic-wise questions.
- Maths: Std 7 + Std 8 NCERT/Balbharati mathematics textbooks. Solve all examples and exercises.
- Past Year Papers: Solve last 5 years of NMMS papers from your state. Available on MSCE Pune website (Maharashtra) or other state boards' sites.

Common Mistakes Aspirants Make
- Ignoring Class 7 syllabus. Many SAT questions test Class 7 concepts. Don't focus only on current Class 8 material.
- Skipping MAT practice. Reasoning is unfamiliar to many school students who only see textbook content. Daily MAT practice for 60 days makes a huge difference.
- Not solving previous year papers. NMMS often repeats question patterns and even similar questions. Past papers are gold.
- Underestimating Maths. Only 20 questions but high-yielding (1 mark each, easy to score full 20). Don't lose easy marks here.
- Not visiting the school's NMMS coordinator. Each school has a teacher or coordinator handling NMMS applications. Talk to them early — they have past papers, application deadlines, and study resources.
- Last-minute application. Income certificate from Tehsildar takes 1–2 weeks. Apply for all required documents at the start of the academic year.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is NMMS only for Std 8?
Yes — NMMS is a one-time exam for Std 8 students. The scholarship begins from Std 9 if you qualify and continues through Std 12 (subject to academic conditions).
My family income is around ₹3.5 lakh — am I eligible?
The cap is ₹3,50,000 (₹3.5 lakh) per year combined parental income. If your income is exactly at or above this, you're not eligible. Get an updated income certificate from Tehsildar; under-the-cap status must be officially documented.
Can I retake NMMS if I don't qualify the first time?
No — NMMS is taken only once during Std 8. If you don't qualify, you cannot retake the exam. This is why preparation matters so much.
What if I move to a different school during Std 9–12?
The scholarship continues as long as you're a regular student in any government, government-aided, or recognised school in India. Inform the new school's NMMS coordinator and update your details with the state board.
In which medium is the NMMS Maharashtra exam conducted?
Maharashtra NMMS is conducted in 4 mediums: Marathi, English, Hindi, and Urdu. You select your preferred medium at the time of application. Question papers are bilingual (your medium + English) for clarity.
Is NMMS easier than Maharashtra State Scholarship (PSS)?
Different difficulty levels. NMMS is national-level with broader syllabus (Std 7 + 8). PSS Std 7 is conducted by Maharashtra State Board and is more state-syllabus focused. Many students appear for both. NMMS has more competition due to national reach but bigger total scholarship value.
What documents do I need to apply?
Required: (1) Std 7 marksheet, (2) Income certificate from Tehsildar (latest), (3) Caste certificate (if applicable), (4) School Bonafide certificate, (5) Aadhaar card, (6) Passport-size photo + signature scans, (7) Bank account details for scholarship disbursement.
