Who is a Talathi?
Talathi (तलाठी) is the village-level revenue officer of the Maharashtra Revenue Department. Historically called Kulkarni, the Talathi is responsible for maintaining land records (7/12 utara, 8-A statement, Ferfar mutations), assisting in revenue collection, and reporting village administration issues to the Circle Officer.
Talathi Bharti is one of the largest Grade C recruitment drives in Maharashtra — 4,000–5,000 vacancies per cycle attracting 7–10 lakh applications.

Talathi Bharti has a single-stage written examination (no physical test).

Section 1 — मराठी व्याकरण (Marathi Grammar)
शुद्धलेखन (spelling), समानार्थी शब्द (synonyms), विरुद्धार्थी शब्द (antonyms), संधी विच्छेद, समास (द्वंद्व, तत्पुरुष, कर्मधारय, बहुव्रीहि, द्विगु, अव्ययीभाव), लिंग, वचन, विभक्ती, प्रयोग (कर्तरी, कर्मणी, भावे), क्रियापद प्रकार, वाक्यप्रचार, म्हणी, अलंकार (उपमा, रूपक, यमक, अनुप्रास).
Section 2 — English Grammar & Vocabulary
Synonyms, Antonyms, One-word substitutes, Idioms & Phrases, Prepositions, Articles, Tenses, Voice (Active/Passive), Direct/Indirect Speech, Sentence correction, Question tags, Comparative degrees, Conjunctions.
Section 3 — सामान्य ज्ञान (General Knowledge)
Indian Constitution (Fundamental Rights, DPSPs, key Articles), Maharashtra polity (CM, Governor, Districts, Revenue Divisions), Panchayat Raj (73rd Amendment), Land Revenue System (7/12, 8-A, Ferfar, MLRC 1966, Talathi Saja, Circle Officer, Tahsildar), Indian History, Geography (Maharashtra rivers, mountains), Current Affairs (national + Maharashtra), Sports, Awards.
Section 4 — बुद्धिमापन चाचणी (Reasoning)
Number series, Letter series, Coding-Decoding, Analogies, Blood relations, Direction sense, Ranking (row problems), Odd-one-out, Statement-Conclusion, Syllogism, Clock & Calendar, Simple arithmetic reasoning, Mirror image, Cube & Dice.
Eligibility Criteria
- Age: 18–38 years for General (relaxations: OBC/EWS +3 yrs, SC/ST +5 yrs, Ex-servicemen +10 yrs)
- Education: Bachelor's degree in any discipline from a recognised university
- Computer: MSCIT / MS-CIT (100 hr course) or equivalent — CCC, DOEACC, etc.
- Marathi: Must be able to read, write, speak Marathi fluently
- Nationality: Indian citizen, domiciled in Maharashtra
The Talathi's Role & Records
A Talathi manages several critical land documents. Understanding these is helpful both for the exam GK and future job:
- 7/12 Utara (सात-बारा उतारा): The primary land record — Column 7 lists rights/ownership, Column 12 lists crops. Every farmer's most-requested document.
- 8-A statement (आठ-अ): Total landholding summary for a single landowner across all villages in a taluka.
- Ferfar (फेरफार): Register of mutations — every sale, gift, inheritance, partition. Crucial for legal proof of ownership transfer.
- Village Form 6 & 7: Records of villages under a Talathi Saja.
Revenue Hierarchy (bottom-up)
Kotwal → Talathi → Circle Officer (Mandal Adhikari) → Tahsildar → SDO (Sub-Divisional Officer) → District Collector → Divisional Commissioner.
